View Full Version : concours '06
beemerduc July 7th, 2005, 11:20 AM has everyone seen the notice of a "superlative" concours d'elegance for motorcycles at the ritz-carlton half moon bay on may 6, 2006? sounds like something that could be blended into an MSMC event, a ride or dinner or somesuch.
supposed to be info available at www.legendofthemotorcycle.com, but even after downloading their special player I could not make the system work. I'm sure the more cyber-talented can succeed.

Alex July 8th, 2005, 12:07 AM Terry -
This is the first I've heard of it, but it sounds like a heck of an event. Their site does seem to work OK, and is quite nice looking; but flash-based sites can be a pain in the neck for many browsers. The timing means it will be right around Death Valley, but that doesn't mean we can't have some type of event around the concours....
Colin July 8th, 2005, 01:52 AM the "full boat" ticket is pricey, but seems very, very swanky....
Annie July 8th, 2005, 10:29 AM The event sounds pretty cool... I like the idea of period costumes - already have one in mind that I'd want to wear with a BIG fancy hat and umbrella! Too bad it's during Death Valley, though. Maybe we could just do the Friday night reception thing.
beemerduc July 8th, 2005, 11:37 AM hey, are we not the very definition, the gold standard, the ur-padres, of motorcycle swanky?
and if we had a mind to, could we not re-sked DV a week or two earlier?

Scott July 8th, 2005, 12:39 PM Great Idea,,,,,
Can you post in the Ride Schedule Update Thread...

WORLD MOTORCYCLE CONCOURS TO DEBUT;
CALL FOR ENTRIES ANNOUNCED
“Legend of the Motorcycle™: International Concours d’Elegance” -
Announcing the world’s first concours d’elegance exclusively for
motorcycles, encompassing a century of style, design and ingenuity.
Representing motorcycling’s past, present and future, Legend of the
Motorcycle is a landmark event centered around the concours d’elegance - an
exhibition of 200 motorcycles covering nearly 100 years of history, judged
by an international panel of experts. The inaugural event’s featured marques
will be Crocker and Brough Superior.
An open call-for-entries is being issued in conjunction with the news of the
event’s debut. The selection committee will be searching for only the best
in rare, unique, exceptionally preserved, and accurately restored running
machines. The deadline for entries is November 30th.
In addition to the standard class awards, there will be special category
awards such as the exclusively licensed Steve McQueen™ Award selected by a
panel of celebrities, the Industry Award selected by executives of major
motorcycle companies, and the People’s Choice Award that Gov. Schwarzenegger
has been invited to confer.
Other features of this first annual charitable event include the Field of
Fame™ display * bikes owned by past celebrities such as Elvis and James
Dean, the Hall of Fame Museum display * pedigree bikes ridden by racing
legends, and the Concept Bikes display * a showcase of conceptual and
prototype models from international manufacturers and individual collectors,
to name but a few.
“Legend of the Motorcycle is a celebration of the art of motorcycling. It
pays homage to the rich heritage, innovation, beauty and lifestyle the
motorcycle imbues”, says founder Jared Zaugg. “The collaboration on this has
been incredible”, he continues. “Involved are some extraordinary people
including the co-curators of the Guggenheim’s record-breaking exhibit OThe
Art of the Motorcycle’, the Chief Judge of the Louis Vuitton Classic, and
the Chief Judge of the Pebble Beach Concours, not to mention others.”
Established to create a forum for motorcycling on a level only previously
associated with fine automobiles, Legend of the Motorcycle is, in the words
of Zaugg, poised to become the finest annual platform for motorcycling
heritage since the advent of the motorcycle.
The lawns atop the rugged Pacific Ocean at the Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay,
California will play host to this premier event on May 6th, 2006. Half Moon
Bay is a scenic 30-mile drive south of San Francisco in a spectacular
setting of ocean and mountains.
For detailed information about the event and submitting a pre-1976 bike of
any marque for consideration in the concours, visit the website at
http://www.LegendoftheMotorcycle.com.

Colin September 24th, 2005, 07:49 PM Interesting....the board seems to have the right cred...it'll be great if it's for real and they can pull it together....better still if it becomes an annual event.
Scott McC April 26th, 2006, 11:55 PM Ok I'll just say it...
I can't do Death Valley this year, for two reasons... (Yes excuses are excuses....:peep: )
#1 Close family friend's 90th Birthday Celebration on Friday (Sid Colberg, long time vintage racing buddy, orig organizer/leader of SCCA / Orig. Investor in Laguna Seca in the '50's)
#2 Participating in 50th Annual Hillsborough Concours on Sunday... (My childhood hometown.)
That said, Saturday's open, so we're attending the #1 Annual "Legends of the Motorcycle" Concours at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay. I've been told it'll be the "Pebble Beach Concours for Motorcycles" many bikes are Super Special and we know some participants. Shaun, Matthew (4) and I are doing it.

To those not at Furnace Creek, interested in joining us??
I TOTALLY SEEING THIS BECOMING AN ANNUAL MSMC EVENT... NO QUESTION :first:
Cheers,
Scott McC
Alex May 7th, 2006, 10:47 AM Some folks posted pictures and stories about the event on SBR.
Here's a link. (http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27734)
Sounds like a fun time!
kirkmoon May 9th, 2006, 03:37 PM Alex -
I hate to do another "hit and run" post, but I'm pretty sure many of your members would enjoy looking at this thread (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136413)I posted over on AdvRider on the event. I took lots of pics. Several others added their own pics and links to other outstanding reports on the event to the thread. If you like looking at bike "pr0n", you will probably want to check it out.
It was a truly amazing event. I would suspect that your group would want to make this an annual pilgrimage. I've never seen so many exceptional bikes and knowledgeable motorcycle buffs in one place at the same time.
Regards,
Kirk Moon
Colin May 9th, 2006, 05:39 PM funny, that event was discussed on this forum at least 6 months ago when it was first getting organized. many folks thought it would never get off the ground. it seems to have been a roaring success.
i had reservations at the Ritz but cancelled them to attend Death Valley.
i see that ewan macgregor was there....now even vicki will be disappointed we didn't attend!
(edit: those bikes are amazing, the radial engine chopper is insane...and it appears the Worlds Fastest Indian was present)
(edit2: looks like it'll be held the same weekend next year. maybe we should move DV...)

I was wondering when it would be next year. Did they already announce the date? ... I couldn't find it on the website. I definitely think we should try and schedule DV so folks can go to both. So did anyone dress in "period costume"? All the pictures people are posting are motorcycles! Silly me, but how about the people and the costumes?

The date for next year was posted on the last page of the program which was handed out at the event: May 5, 2007. It will be held at the same venue, the Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay. Sounds like their web site will remain live, so you can probably get updated information from there as time goes on.
I only saw one or two people in "period costume" at the event and I think they might have been a part of the Hillsborough classic car group that visited the event. Almost everyone was dressed in tidy but casual street dress and a number were in typical motorcycle garb.

Other "celebrities" sighted included Peter Fonda (who apparently was floating along on a Vodka high most of the time and very friendly with anyone who cared to talk to him), Mert Lawill, Kenny Roberts Sr., Arlen Ness, Alain de Cadenet (of Victory by Design on PBS) and perhaps a few others. The featured marques at the show were Brough and Crocker, and the "Crocker" of Crocker was there with his family. There are only something like 40-45 Crocker motorcycles still extant in the world, and I think around 20 of them were at this show. The largest collection of these bikes ever anywhere in the world. And they were really beautiful.
You guys would absolutely love this show. I gar-on-tee.
Alex May 10th, 2006, 12:25 AM Alain de Cadenet (of Victory by Design on PBS)
According to a post on SBR, Alain was involved in a serious accident on his Vincent Black Shadow on 35 (Skyline). Very little has been posted elsewhere, but hopefully he is recovering quickly and fully...

That's terrible.
I was ridng south on Skyline Sunday morning around 10 am in hopes of seeing the "Ride of Fame" go by. Just a bit north of the junction of Tunitas Creek Rd. the police had shut down the road. I waited there for around 15 minutes with a lot of other bikers and cars, then they let us through. There was no evidence of an accident, but several more police cars were parked along the side of the road for the next mile or so. Then nothing. I thought it was very strange. I bet that was where the accident happened and we just missed it. Very unfortunate. I hope he is OK.
Scott McC May 10th, 2006, 09:30 AM A friend was on the participant's ride and I was told Alain apparently hit a very large pothole in his Vincent (rode it up from Los Angeles for this event!) and front the wheel broke. He went off the road on Skyline Blvd during the tour north of Alice's and broke his wrist. From what I was told, that was the worst of his injuries Thank Goodness. (I drove in the 1986 Mille Miglia as part of a five car pre-war Alfa team with Alain and others)
I will post some images of the Concours later.
Cheers

Glad to hear that his injuries weren't too severe.
Vegas Beemer guy June 3rd, 2006, 04:17 PM It seems this event will be worth attending in the future. Why not combine this event with DV as Terry McGarry had suggested. Better yet take it a step further and you can all come visit and stay with us in Vegas to complete the trip. Start with the Concours in Carmel -Montery, ride on to DV for two nights then off to Vegas for a couple of days, then head for home. I would be happy to work with whomever wishes to put this together to make this happen as far as the Vegas leg is concerned.
Have fun and ride safe,
STeve
Annie June 4th, 2006, 12:40 PM Well, it looks like there is another conflict again for 2007. Per an above post by Kirkmoon, the concours is set for May 5, 2007. The club has reserved the same weekend at the Inn in Death Valley.
By the way, Steve, the concours is not in Monterey/Carmel, but in Half Moon Bay. I guess we'll have to talk to the powers that be and organizers on what should be done.
I would certainly like to attend both, but if we push DV back 1 weekend, we'll be hitting the "Mother's Day" weekend issue again. Planning and making sure everyone is happy about the plan are always hard to do...
Vegas Beemer guy June 4th, 2006, 02:24 PM I'm sure we could work something out. I'm not sure how important mother's day is in DV or to the club members to miss it. See what could be done. If we could get our reservation a week or two earlier in DV it will only be cooler and an easier ride for the group.
Have fun and ride safe,
Steve
